Istanbul .. Day 21

Asia in pictures
We spent the day visiting the Asian side of Istanbul, a 30-minute ferry ride across the Bosporus. Right away we realized that today was a holiday, Children’s Day, when we noticed a flag out our neighbor’s window and we came upon a kids’ parade on the way to the boat. We celebrated it, in a way, with a charming 11-year-old who struck up a conversation with us on the ferry, in very good English. What a cute fellow he was, along with his little brother and sister; their dad was so proud of them. Asian Istanbul seems newer; the streets are a bit wider, enough for sidewalk cafes, and the markets among the freshest and loveliest we’ve ever seen, especially for vegetables, olives, bread and fish. As always, there were interesting folks everywhere, including two different young couples who carefully examined the grounds in their Turkish coffee cups, apparently to tell their fortune? The late ferry ride back home was most pleasant, past four cruise ships in port for the afternoon. We hope those people enjoyed their day half as much as we did.
